Challenging Story to Get Water
Naki is the wife of Mr.Kalyan Mal, s/o Rama Dungri. She is living in the Pantalai hamlet of Kharadiya village. Their house is at the top of the hill. They have 8 members in the family. The animals in the family are – one cow, 3 buffalo, 2 she buffalo, and 8 goat, also part of the family. Naki is taking care of all the family members and cattle. She fetches water for drinking and domestic use from an open well. She needs to walk 3 km, and it takes 2.5 hours for one round. She has to go for four to five rounds daily to fetch water at home. A major challenge for Naki in the summer season is that she goes to work in NREGA, and during that period, cattle do not have drinking water. When she arrives at home in the evening, she does not go to take water from the open well. Hence, many times they do not even have water for domestic purposes, and finally Nakfacesa faces a big challenge in bringing water for her family.

Naki’s husband, Kalyanmal s/o Ram, is also a member of the Village development committee of Kharadiya village. For two years. Back during the VDC meeting, Kalyan Mal discussed the water problem at his home. Then, the Village Development Committee decided to construct a Roof rainwater harvesting system at his home. During construction, Naki works hard digging the tank. She also helps to bring raw material to the construction site, as it is far from the roadside. The capacity of the tank is 7500 liters, and this year, 2010, it filled 750 liters of water. In 2008, it was filled with 6000 liters. The family has used the water for domestic purposes and grows vegetables like brinjal, etc.
The vegetable was available till February 2009. Besides these 8 Goats, 1 cow, and 2 buffalo also drink water from the tank. Last year (2009) was also full. The family started to use water at the end of October and used it by the end of April 2010. Cattle (Goat) drink water from the tank, and it is also used to grow vegetables for household purposes. The vegetables were available to the family for 6 months. The family is very happy to have this water tank, and they feel proud to have it. It can see clearly to Naki’s face. Not only neighbours of Naki but also all the villagers of Kharadiya and adjoining villages demand the Village Development Committee meeting and approach to RBKS to construct the tank at their home also.
